Dallas, Texas – Despite multiple weather delays throughout the day, play was completed at the E-Z-GO Eastern Championship. Stuart Deane, PGA golf coach at the University of Texas at Arlington, captured the Championship firing a 2-under 70 today for a two-day total of 136, 8-under par.
Deane edged Jack Lempke, assistant professional at Bent Tree Country Club, and Greg Gregory, assistant professional at Hidden Creek Golf Course, by one stroke to win his ninth NTPGA Individual Major Championship and his second E-Z-GO Eastern Championship. Deane caught fire starting the back nine carding four birdies in a row on holes 10 through 13. After Gregory burned the lip for birdie on hole 18, Deane putted for bogey on #18 for a one stroke win.
“It feels really great [to be back in the win column],” said Deane after his round. “You know, last year was a totally different year with the birth of our second child and my world was kind of turned upside down for great reasons, but you know I feel like this year I kind of have my feet back under me. This course is an odd golf course to a degree because it takes driver out of your hand. You have to hit it out of the fairway a lot. I was two shots down at the turn, and I birdied four in a row to take the lead. 16, 17, and 18 are tough holes and with it getting late with the rain delays, it just became a matter of crossing the line first.”
Two professionals finished tied for fourth at 4-under par 140. They include, Vince Jewell, PGA teaching professional at Woodbridge Golf Club, and Chad Moscovic, PGA director of instruction at Eldorado Country Club.
The Championship included a Senior Division that was comprised of 28 of the 129 participants aged 50 or older. This division competed for a separate $8,250 purse and played at a modified yardage. Perry Arthur, PGA golf course owner at The Golf Club of Dallas, was the 2015 E-Z-GO Eastern Championship Senior Division champion. Arthur, who posted rounds of 73-71—144, even par, took home $1,400 for his win.
“It always feel good to win, no matter what it is,” said Arthur after his round. Not only was this his first victory in the Senior Division of an NTPGA Section Individual Major Championship, but it was also his first time competing in the Senior Division. “I played okay today. I got off to a good start, birdied the first three holes, and just kind of went into protection mode from there.”
The first weather delay came at 12:47 p.m. when heavy rain and lightning stopped play for an hour and 28 minutes. Play resumed at 2:15 p.m. The second weather delay came at 3:25 p.m. only halting play for 35 minutes. Play resumed at 4:00 p.m. The delays mainly impacted the afternoon wave of starting times.
This 36-hole NTPGA major championship was the first of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf Cars / Lajitas Golf Resort Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Justin Golf and Wee Golf, and serves as a qualifier for the 2015 Texas Joe Black Cup and James P. Jordan Cup teams. The E-Z-GO Eastern Championship featured a field of 129 Northern Texas PGA Members and Apprentices competing at Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas.
The Open Division field competed for a share of the $29,500 purse with Deane taking home $4,000 for his victory. The overall Championship purse was $39,750.
The E-Z-GO Golf Eastern Championship was presented by Advantage Hole In One, Adventures In Golf, AT&T Byron Nelson, Greg Norman Collection / Dunning Golf, PGA TOUR and Pukka Headwear.
