Opening Ceremony
Produced by Danny Boyle of Slumdog Millionaire fame and headlined by David Beckham, undoubtedly the London 2012 opening ceremony will be a big friggin’ deal. Costing upwards of $32 million dollars (USD) according to one source “It promises to be an occasion that will bring joy to Beckham’s British fans who were left disappointed that he was left out of Team GB.” I fully expect to see the Queen Mum to have a wicked breakdancing routine mid ceremony.
When: July 27
Men’s 200m Individual Medley
Probably the most anticipated event in London is the showdown between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte for the gold. Phelps, the Olympic poster boy (having won 14 gold medals), set a world record for his time at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It’s pretty much that the top medal is headed back home to the states with either Phelps or his teammate.
When: August 1
Men’s 100m Sprint
The fastest man on the planet (give or take a step), Usain Bolt, looks to solidify that title after a couple of losses recently. Bolt set a world record clocking in a 9.69 in Beijing then lowered it to 9.58 in 2009. Our boys in red, white, and blue Tyson Gay and Walter Dix are prepared to give Bolt a run for his money.
When: August 4
Women’s Beach Volleyball Gold Medal Match
Your last chance to the hottest athletes in the 2012 Olympics battle it out in one of the hardest sports at the games. Team U.S.A. with Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh look to add to their trophy case and bring home another set of gold medals.
When: August 8
Men’s Basketball Gold Medal Match
The only game that matters for the U.S. is the one that gives you jewelry right after it. Kobe, LeBron and company look to thrash their opponent like Muhammad Ali vs. a Muppet.
When: August 12
