Well we’re just one week away from Halloween so you better be planning out those costumes. But in the mean time, the Blitz Weekender has plenty of fun and thrilling events to keep you occupied. So grab a friend or your spouse and pick out your favorite things to do this weekend.
Thursday October 24th
Calgary Flames vs Dallas Stars: The Dallas Stars are back on the ice at the American Airlines Center taking on the Calgary Flames. Both teams are a part of the Western Conference, but the Stars currently are sitting in last place in the Central Division and the Flames are second to last in the Pacific Division. Both teams have a lot to prove and will be bringing their best, so you better get your tickets so you can see all the action unfold in front of your eyes. www.stars.nhl.com
Halloween Nights: The Dallas Zoo gates will stay open late for this special event. Thursday kicks the four day event off from 5-8 p.m. You have the chance to dress in your costume and trick-or-treat at 15 different themed locations. At the Wizard of Oz-themed Picnic Ridge, you can get you picture taken with the Scarecrow, and there are many more fun themed stops. So get dressed and get over to this dangerously fun experience. www.dallaszoo.com
Friday October 25th
Hitchcock!: There are plenty of Hitchcock fans out there, and there is no better time of year than now to celebrate this great legend. Alfred Hitchcock will be recognized and showcased by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra this Friday and Saturday. At 8 p.m. both nights the orchestra will play selections from scores of Hitchcock’s most famous thrillers like To Catch a Thief and North By Northwest. While the chilling music plays, screen clips will play above the stage, so all you Hitchcock fans better get over to the Meyerson Symphony Center this weekend. www.dallasculture.org
Thrillvania: The four haunted houses at Thrillvania won’t be around for long, just open this weekend and Halloween night. But these aren’t for the faint of heart either. You can visit Verdun Manor with the wereworld and his experiments, or see the diabolical clowns at the Labyrinth of Terror. If you aren’t scared enough then you can journey over to the house of the deranged psychologist’s Trail of Torments and then make your way through Thorn Hall to the old stone church. It’s recommended that a night light is purchased after so you can sleep. www.hauntedhousepark.com
Saturday October 26th
Temple Owls vs SMU Mustangs: It’s homecoming weekend for SMU so you can bet their crowds will be large. Not to mention they are going into this game with momentum after a five point victory last week with their first away win. Despite the Mustangs 2-4 overall record, the team is 1-1 in the conference and a win this weekend could get them a winning conference record. Temple has struggled this year, but managed to grab their first win of the season last week. With both teams coming off a win, SMU will need it students, alumni and fans all out their cheering to pull in the win. www.smumustangs.com
Texas Longhorns vs. TCU Horned Frogs: TCU took a hard loss last week to Oklahoma State but is looking to change their fate this Saturday against conference rival Texas. The Longhorns are just coming off of a much needed win against OU, and now have a 3-0 conference record. The Horned Frogs will need their entire student section full to cheer on the team. Taking on the Longhorns won’t be easy, but TCU is up for the challenge. www.gogrogs.cstv.com
Chicken Fried Steak Day: Thanks to Blitz’ unofficial intern Jeffrey Yarbrough, October 26th is Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day. Blitz is helping Jeffrey and everyone make this an excuse to eat as much Chicken Fried Steak as possible without feeling guilty. For more information call 214-485-7303.
San Francisco Rose Halloween Bash: Join the folks at the San Francisco Rose this Saturday for their 9th annual Halloween Costume Bash. Starting at 9 p.m. there will be spooky karaoke, $2 beers and $3 shots! Costumes are of course encouraged but not mandatory. There will be great fresh food and so much more, but you’ll have to show up to have the fun. www.sanfranciscorose.com
Sunday October 27th
Monster Dash: We know you’ll be consuming a lot of candy around Halloween, but we have a great way to make up for it. The Monster Dash offers a race for everyone and of course you should be dressed in your costume. There is a half marathon, 10K and a 5K, and you can enter the costume contest after. The run offers a chance to journey through a beautiful course while checking out the competition for the costume contest. So start putting it together, but make sure it’s runner friendly. www.dfwmonster.org
Dallas Uncorked: Chef Abraham Salum and Dallas Uncorked have come together for the annual fall harvest dinner. The event will feature wines of the Rioja, Cataluna, and Basque regions of Spain with a lovely seated dinner. And all proceeds benefit the Stewpot, which helps with the betterment of those homeless. So for a fun and relaxing night of trying new things, this a great way to do it. www.dallasuncorked.org
