Newly signed contender Valentina Shevchenko has already competed in two fights inside the octagon of the UFC which gives her a record of 1-1 with the company. Now she has been scheduled to face former Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm in the main event for UFC on Fox 20 in Chicago, Illinois.
With that being said, this fight looks to be a terrible matchup which could have Shevchenko destroyed with ease by the former champion, but that might not be the outcome.
Before anyone gets the idea that Shevchenko won’t be a challenge for Holm, let me explain to you why she very well could be and possibly even walk away as the victor.
First off Holm, being a former boxer and kick boxer, is very well-rounded in her striking game that has proven to be deadly in every fight and might not be able to be matched. Well, that is where Shevchenko is strong in her techniques as well. Shevchenko also is a former boxer and kick boxer giving her deadly striking as well that could just match the caliber of Holm. It would even be interesting to see Holm in a full on striking fight against a fighter that has just as much experience in striking as her as well as a chin made of iron to see how much punishment both of these amazing female athletes can take till one possibly falls.
Then there is the ground game that Shevchenko holds in her skills that could prove to be a great advantage for her in this fight. She has five victories via submission where Holm has no victories via submission. This could very well be Shevchenko’s chance to make a big statement to the rest of the women’s division by putting on a great ground game against Holm and place her in a world of trouble as Miesha Tate did against Holm at UFC 196 where she would finish her in the fifth round by a rear-naked choke, proving that everyone has a weakness. If Shevchenko could perform the same performance on the ground as Tate did then it looks like she will just be able to win the fight after all and end up with a major win after only three fights inside the octagon of the UFC.
Though of course, we cannot forget just how dangerous of a striker Holm is and very defensive she is with takedowns making it extremely difficult to fight her on the ground and try to take advantage over her.
Even pressuring her is difficult and is like asking her to knock you out as she keeps pressure on her opponents and gives them no ground to set up and combinations, which she showed very effectively in her fight against Ronda Rousey at UFC 193.
One last thing to remember about Shevchenko, she is new to the UFC and possibly has plenty more to show us on how tough of a fighter she really is. She might have plenty of tricks up her sleeve that she is just dying to show everyone in this fight against Holm.
“IT IS ON!”
