After splitting their last two games, the UNT Men’s Basketball team is now 7-9 with a 2-1 record in Conference USA. The Mean Green are in a bit of hole because they’re currently ranked seventh in the C-USA standings. But the way they’ve played in their last two games, the Mean Green seem to be improving a little through each game.

My thoughts on their last two
UTEP: The Mean Green trailed at halftime by ten, but the battled back, and led 71-70 with about four minutes left to go, but despite a valiant effort they lost 84-75. Jeremy Combs led the Mean Green with 20 points, and a career-high 19 rebounds. J-Mychal Reese added an additional 17 points with nine assists. The Mean Green had a total of 50 rebounds in the entire game. This was their first loss in conference play.

Rice: This was a must-win game for the Mean Green. The Mean Green couldn’t afford costly mistakes and terrible play that would lead to a defeat. The Mean Green did the opposite and they defeated their C-USA rivals, the Rice Owls. Best part is that this was at home. The Mean Green had control nearly the entire game and only trailed once, and had an eleven-point lead at the half. Eric Katenda had a career-high of 18 points in his second start for the Mean Green. Deckie Johnson added an additional 19 points. The Mean Green won 85-74, and earned their second conference win. This was sort of a revenge game for the Mean Green as they were eliminated in the playoffs by Rice last season in a very humiliating way.

On Thursday, the Mean Green will take on Marshall at home. Marshall is 3-0 so far in C-USA play so it’ll be a big challenge for the Mean Green. The Mean Green will need to continue to win. They can’t afford to lose because another loss will drop them further behind the standings of Conference USA.
