The Good Ol’ Hayes
By C. Patterson
I caught up with the newsman to talk about life in the Metroplex and the Simply Grace alcohol and drug recovery residence charity golf tournament.
What’s been your favorite thing about DFW since the move from Atlanta?
People are so much nicer and so much more pleasant.
Cowboys fan yet?
Man I’m trying. I grew up in NFC East territory and going to the Yale Bowl when the Giants played at Yale University back in the late 60s early 70s my dad was taking me to Giant games so I have been a fan ever since.
What moved you to be involved with Simply Grace Golf Tournament?
I feel really passionate about what Anika [Cooper] is doing because it is a problem that effects every segment of society and there is never enough help out there for people who really want it and really need it. So to have somebody who’s passionate about trying to help folks who really need is extremely important. She helps people stand up and battle this problem head-on and get their lives turned around and get them back on their feet and productive again. Helping them feel good about themselves again, building their self-esteem because that’s a big part of conquering any addiction – feeling good about who you are.
What’s your golf game like?
My golf game on the good days it’s horrible and the bad days it’s even worse. I can probably play two or three good holes and then the next 15 are just terrible. Thank goodness this is not a residential area. I’ve been known to break a window or two. If I can hit them straight instead of shanking them I’d be a great golfer.
Who has become your NBC BFF?
I’d have to say Newy Scruggs and obviously Deborah [Ferguson] she’s my partner. She is so sweet and so nice. She’s like the mayor I mean she knows everybody on that Fort Worth side of town and all the players on the Dallas side of town. Having her is like having the DFW encyclopedia she can tell you what places are important, what to eat, which is hugely important to me. I’ve got to know the right places to go to eat. But Deborah has been awesome and Newy is just a cool soul. The whole morning show group is so unique and so different because they are so pleasant, so cordial, so focused and they really want to win. I love that about our morning crew. We like to have fun too. We had Kendra Lyn get engaged on the air and people were jumping around doing cartwheels and genuinely excited for her. You know it’s rare in the TV industry where we naturally compete against each other, to really have a sense of teamwork. I’m really enjoying that atmosphere.
