Earlier this week, the first look at Rogue One was released. The film, set in between episodes three and four, released its first trailer. The trailer immediately gives off the Star Wars vibe as it seeks to introduce new characters and a parallel story to the one that audiences already know.

This will be the first of several planned spin-off movies which seek to capitalize on the history of certain characters and stories within the stories that the Star Wars audience is already aware of. This specific story will focus on the rebels that were able to steal the plans for the Death Star.

In the trailer itself, the focus shifts from the characters and places that are familiar to introducing some of the newest. Everything in this trailer feels like Star Wars and that is the most important thing. In order for the film to be successful it has to tread the line of new while still maintaining a classic feel. It has to be fan service while at the same time gaining more fans.

The trailer introduces the audience to Jyn Erso, played by actress Felicity Jones. It does a good job of setting the character up as a capable rebel who seems like she will be able to take control of the film. There are also shots of the Death Star being built as well as the early stages of the rebellion being formed.

The touchstones that are offered to fans in this film will likely drum up support for the movies as it is set to release in December of this year. Without returning actors like The Force Awakens, Rogue One will have to entice moviegoers with the promise of new content and an adventure worthy of the Star Wars brand.

The trailer does a good job of letting the audience know that the focus of this film will not be Jedi’s with their thoughts of right and wrong and light sabers, but it will instead be bounty hunters. The fact that this film is moving away from the roots that make a film a Star Wars film should be exciting because it won’t be bound by all of the heavy expectations that come with those.

The exploration of bounty hunting and hand to hand to blaster combat should be a fun breakup of the light sabers and Jedi order that come with the inclusion of them. Overall, the first trailer looks interesting and gives fans of the canonical films a reason to at least be interested by what will be in Rogue One. It is most definitely worth checking out.
