The Texas Rangers went into Tampa Bay hoping to extend their series-win streak to two, but that didn’t happen. They managed to take Game 1, but they lost the next two.
Fortunately, they’re still in a six-game lead in the American League West Standings. But the only thing they need to concentrate on is their series against Cincinnati that starts tonight.
The Reds’ record since the all-star break is 21-14 and they have scored 88 runs in the first inning this season, which is the fourth-highest in the league. Yu Darvish and Derek Holland, who will be the two starting pitchers for Texas can’t allow the Reds do any early damage.
On July 4, the Reds dismissed Mark Riggins as pitching coach. It was during that time the Reds had the worst pitching rotation in the majors with an ERA of 5.53. Since dismissing Riggins, the Reds pitching has improved their ERA to 3.94. The Rangers offense can’t let that scare them since they’re eighth in the league in scoring runs and seventh in hits. Four players on the batting lineup have homered at least 20 times.
Cincinnati surrendered 18 runs against the Dodgers last night. Rangers pitching allowed sixteen runs in their last two games, and they can’t let that happen again. Pitching on both sides are coming off shaky performances.
Derek Holland will take the mound for the first time since being placed on the disabled list in June. This season has been a roller coaster for Holland. His record is 5-5 and he’s struggled.
