Denver Nuggets Overall Record: 25-38

The Denver Nuggets went 2-2 this past week. Will we see the change in play we’ve been expecting since the first week of play or will the Nuggets play a few good games and fall off like always. I’d say, the guys looked great in the absence of team captain Danilo Gallinari. Let’s take a look at the past week.

Feb. 29 – Grizzlies 103 – Nuggets 96 – Loss
The Nuggets were able to hang with the Grizzlies in the first two quarters. They went into the half only being down by a point, 48-47. After three quarters of play the score was knotted up evenly at 71 and there was a glimmer of hope that the upset was on. As I’ve mentioned countless times previously though, the Nuggets simply do not have the big men to defend opponents and that is where Zach Randolph of the Grizzlies made his impact. The Nuggets did not have an answer with his emphatic finishes at the rim to close out a tight game. The Grizzlies also did their damage with free throws attempting 36 of them. The Nuggets Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets in scoring with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He also turned the damn ball over 20 times. It’s hard to win games when you’re basically giving up 50 points to opponents on turnovers and free throws.

Mar. 2 – Nuggets 117 – Lakers 107 – Win
Kobe Bryant was held to five points playing 11 minutes. The Lakers are rebuilding and the young guys from LA looked sharp throughout the game. The Nuggets played like they wanted to win from the tip off. D. J. Augustin poured in 26 points and 5 assists. Emmanuel Mudiay added 22 points and 7 assists. Sure the Lakers aren’t a great team. but the Nuggets will take every win they can get.

Mar. 4 – Nets 120 – Nuggets 121 – Overtime Loss
This was a heartbreaking loss in overtime. The Nuggets played a very physical game against Brooklyn. Usually when the Nuggets are pressed against a wall they fold! But not in this case. Gary Harris and Emmanuel Mudiay played great on the wings. I was surprised to see the defensive effort in the fourth quarter and overtime. Key rebounds by Kenneth Faried kept the game close. Gary Harris scored 21 points while Emmanuel Mudiay scored a team high 25 in the overtime loss.

Mar. 6 – Nuggets 116 -Mavericks 114 – Overtime Win
Denver started great in the first quarter by scoring 22 points and holding the Mavericks to 19. The test was how they would come out in the 3rd because the Nuggets usually play flat after halftime. They hung around the whole game with a miracle finish to take the game to overtime. The Nuggets scored 10 while the Mavericks scored only 8 in the last stanza. I was really surprised along with the home town fans to see how the team performed. Kenneth Faried led the team with 25 points and 20 rebounds. He was a beast on the boards. Will Barton added 20 points, Gary Harris and Emmanuel Mudiay each added 16.
