The Texas Rangers had a short week after the All-Star festivities. They had a 4-game series in Boston and it was all about the Rangers. Texas took three out of four games in the Boston Massacre, outscoring them 22-10. Strangely, the only game they lost was the one Cliff Lee pitched. He pitched another complete game and gave up two runs over 9 innings. The Red Sox won in the 11th inning on a Kevin Youkilis sacrifice fly. The Rangers were really close to sweeping one of the best teams in baseball which is a great sign of things to come.
I have been a Rangers fan for years, but Friday was the first time I believe I saw the unimaginable. Bengie Molina hit for the cycle. One of the slowest guys I have ever seen run around the bases in major league baseball legged out a triple in the eighth inning. Since his career began in 1998, that is only his sixth triple. He also became only the eighth player in MLB history to hit for the cycle with a grand slam. He is only the fifth Ranger to ever hit for the cycle and definitely the largest. The players in the dugout were quite amused by his lack of speed. “I would have bet everything I owned that Bengie Molina would never hit for the cycle in his career…ever,” Ian Kinsler said afterwards.
Last Sunday, C.J Wilson pitched like an ace. In 6.2 innings, he struck out 10, a career high, gave up only three hits and a run. If Wilson continues to pitch like that and Lee gets some run support, the Rangers will be a force to reckon with for the rest of the season and playoffs.
This weekend they will be home for a very important 4-game series with the second place Angels who they lead by 4.5 games after last Sunday.
